What does it really mean to be self-employed?
Some people still think it means having endless free time during the day. And honestly, some of the comments I hear about my work schedule can be quite offensive.
So, let’s make it a bit clearer:
Yes, I don’t have a typical 9–5 job
But in reality, most days I work 12–14 hours, my to-do list feels never-ending, and I sometimes work on weekends too.
Yes, I can take a day off when I need to
But there are no paid holidays or sick leaves, so any break means working extra before or after. Lately, I’ve been wondering, should I take public holidays off as well?
Yes, I can plan my day however I want
But that also means I’m the one responsible for everything. I’m a photographer, social media manager, salesperson, web developer, project manager, and accountant. Did I miss something?
Yes, I’m my own boss, and I don’t need permission to go to a doctor’s appointment or something else
But I can be my toughest critic and push myself way harder than any boss ever did.
Yes, being self-employed gives freedom
But it also requires a lot of structure, discipline, and energy. Especially when you’re just starting out and can’t delegate tasks yet.
Every rejection, every ignored message, every missed opportunity… it’s tough and challenging, especially at the beginning.
But no matter what, I’m glad that in 2023 I left my well-paid web developer career and switched to something I’m passionate about.
I’m just keep learning to be more patient, less critical of myself (hello, imposter syndrome), and ALWAYS sign the agreement. Any other advice?
